Do you know how to customise your canvas trainers? What are the steps to follow? How should we start and finish customising sneakers? Today we talked to one of our ambassadors @cajon_de_las_muchascosas to find out more about how to customise this type of trainers with our paints.

Hi Alesia, how did you start customising sneakers?

Hello everyone! My name is Alesia and I am currently customising shoes and other hand-painted accessories. It all started as a hobby. In fact, my first work in relation to art was some paper caricatures I made for my friend Tas in 2015. From there, I thought of a cool name to set up my website and what better than El Cajón de las MuchasCosas. I am very restless and I like to try many techniques, materials... hence the concept of "ManyThings", this way I don't limit my creativity.

After I had my website ready (a totally "amateur" website made by me) I started to move my work in social networks (at that time I remind you that I started only with caricatures and portraits on paper).

One day, an acquaintance gave me the idea of starting to put my illustrations on different models of shoes, and I said to myself: "Why not? After months of hard trials and other obstacles, I did it. If you allow me, I would like to thank my friends Tas, Athal and my partner Alberto. Without them, I wouldn't be here.

How should we prepare the fabric sneakers to start customising them?

In the case of fabric sneakers, I strongly recommend washing them beforehand by hand with fresh or lukewarm water to remove the factory "sizing", as this finish makes the paint not hold on the fabric as well as it should. I never recommend using bleach, softeners... I don't recommend washing the shoes in the washing machine either, as it is very easy to damage both the rubber and the glue that holds certain parts together.

Once the footwear is clean and dry, we can start painting. In this case, I recommend using the Sneakers Paints (they have a lot of shades) mixed in a 50% paint/50% proportion with the Soft Maker (I use a dropper to measure it as accurately as possible), mix the product well (with a brush) and you can start painting.

Let's get to work! How do you customize your sneakers?

I have a very peculiar technique. First, on black shoes I apply a coat of Sneakers Paint White to have a primer and thus create a base so that the following coats of paint don't lose all the splendour of their pigment. Once dry, I freehand sketch the illustration (all with the same Sneakers Paint) and begin to apply colour. Always working with very thin layers of the paint mixture with the Soft Maker.

Once the illustration is finished, I let it dry for at least 12 hours (although in a couple of hours you can see that it is practically dry). And that's it.

Is it important to finish with a finisher or protector?

Of course, I use Tarrago Sneakers Nano Protector as a finishing touch for extra protection and waterproofing. It is a wonderful product.

Do you have a favourite design or any kind of customization that you like to do the most?

I'm going to be totally honest with you. For me, all the designs are special and my favourites. Why? Because the value that any of my clients' designs have is what I like most about my work. The happiness of having a little piece of their soul captured in a pair of trainers is the most gratifying thing of all. That's why I don't have any preference. I dare with portraits, anime...whatever the client wants.

And finally, we would like to know some curiosities. What does this sneakers world mean to you, do you do any other kind of customisation apart from sneakers?

For me it's my lifeline. Before starting what is currently my vocation, I started 2 other times in other sectors that supposedly had a lot of opportunities and possibilities. The truth is that it didn't turn out well. But the important thing is to get up and keep fighting for what you want. It doesn't mean that tomorrow I won't have to reinvent myself and paint potatoes for a living, but today, to dedicate myself to something that I like so much, above all to be able to capture the illusion of a person in their trainers... it's priceless.

I still do portraits and caricatures on paper, but my star products are shoes and hand-painted denim jackets. I also customize other clothes and accessories, but they are not the most common ones.

Thank you very much for your collaboration and for your art, you certainly do a great job. We keep a sentence from Alesia that gives sense to our sale of products to customize trainers from Sneakerscare EU.

"The important thing is not the illustration itself, but the special treatment that the person who has just trusted in my work gives you".
