Textile paint can be used to paint denim jackets, sweatshirts or cotton T-shirts, backpacks and textile accessories such as caps. Making personalized clothing is not as difficult as it seems.

Stay with us and discover, with the help of this guide, how to start creating your own designs from scratch.

Maybe you think you have to have a degree in Fine Arts to be able to do decent work, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Making custom clothing and creating unique pieces is not just for the privileged few.

Anyone can paint, a little better or a little worse but the most important thing is that you use good textile paint, that you have good will and above all that you have a good idea.

Do I have to be a drawing talent to customize clothes with textile paint?

Talent, skills and practice are certainly factors that help to obtain better results. A person with many projects done will surely get to make real works of art but the world of textile customization is not closed to the rest.

People who are likely to achieve incredible results usually follow the following profiles:

Customizers who are already in the industry, either in customizing sneakers or in other fields.

Artists in general: tattoo artists, painters, sketchers, illustrators...

Make-up artists or manicure specialists.

Graphic designers.

Talent and skills help but are not definitive.

We assure you that there is no rule and we have witnessed how people with no experience but with a good vision, manage to customize clothes with textile paint with great success.

In fact, even some of them have managed to find a new passion with which even earn money and do not think that little, crafts are exclusive jobs that become highly valued and, therefore, very well paid.

You must be aware that, with your confidence and a good design you can go VERY far!

In this post, we will talk mainly about how to customize denim jackets.

Let's get down to business!

Customized jackets with textile paint: where to start?

The first step is to stay with us and read the processes and products that we are going to list below. But we don't want to bombard your head with thousands of ideas and concepts, in the end art is a totally experimental terrain in which, with experience, each artist comes to their own processes and conclusions.

This is why you are likely to find contradictory information on different websites dealing with textile painting and clothing customization.

You have to know that in the end, you will find your own method based on your experience.

The big trick is to practice, practice and more practice! We insist that this is an experimental field.

What material do I need to customize clothes?

Mainly you will need the following material:

1.- Textile paint.

2.- Brushes.

3.- The garment you are going to customize.

Yes, that's it, you won't need anything else to customize clothes like a pro.

Our first recommendation, if it is your first customized garment, is that you use an old t-shirt, or some denim that you no longer want or that is damaged.

This way, you can experiment with the processes yourself and come to better conclusions without ruining hundreds of garments.

Once you have done several tests, you will see that it is not so difficult and maybe you get the expected result at first.

You will see that, once you get the effect that meets your expectations, everything will go smoothly with the other designs.

From that moment on, a world of possibilities will open up for you and you will even be able to dedicate yourself fully to this work.

We are sure that your friends and family will be your first customers when they see how far you are able to go.

Nowadays, with social networks, it is very easy to reach a lot of people and have them appreciate your art.

Now, let's take a look at the step by step process to customize denim jackets. Keep in mind that the process of customizing a sweatshirt, a t-shirt or jeans is the same as we will detail below.

Step by step - Personalizing clothes with textile paint

For the realization of this guide, we have consulted with professionals who have been in this world for years.

All of them, experienced artists who have given us the best advice for beginner artists.

Remember that, based on your experience, you may change some steps. This is not a hermetic process.

1. Clean the garment: It seems like a step of overwhelming logic, but it is extremely important to achieve top results. Make sure the garment is clean even if it is new.

New garments come with a protective coating as a finish, which you can't see but it is there. If you start creating your artwork with textile paint over this layer, it is likely to ruin the design with washing.

On the other hand, if you use an old garment, more of the same thing happens, we have to clean it to make sure there are no traces of dirt.

2. Paint the garment: Now the good stuff starts. You will need textile paint like the ones you will find in our Paints category.

Why is it important to dilute the paint? If we apply the textile paint directly on the garment, the finish will be hard and it will be easier to damage it because it will come off the fabric.

Our paint together withTarrago Sneakers Soft Maker, work perfectly and the results will surprise you.

You should also know that our textile paints can be mixed with each other. This way you will get an infinite and totally exclusive range of shades.

If you have a lot of experience, you can also customize clothes using an Sneaker Airbrush.

 3. Thin layers: This is one of the best tips we can give you. It is always better to apply several layers of textile paint than to apply too thick layers. This way, you will increase the durability of the garment.

4. White base coat: Starting with a white coat to work on, usually gives better results and helps to enhance the colors making them more vibrant.

We recommend that you always do this together with the additive.

If you do this step (it is really worth it), do not forget to let the layer dry before proceeding with the customization and continue with the following steps.

5. Make a sketch: If you are an expert, you may not need to do it, but the ideal way to get the results you expect is to make a sketch of the drawing with a pencil on the white layer.

You will avoid making mistakes that are difficult to correct.

6. Adhesive tape: Make sure to cover the areas you don't want to paint so you can create without worrying about staining areas you don't want.

7. Trial and error: Choose the ideal way to work for you and create the work. Here are some tips from professionals:

Wait for the layers to dry while you go through the process naturally.

Use dryers to speed up the process.

8. Protect your design: Surely, after so much work, you will want the design to last as long as possible.

For this step we recommend a finishing coat with Sneakers Matt Maker. It provides a very natural matte finish and protects the paint so that it lasts much longer.

If you are one of those who love gloss, you also have the option of using Sneakers Gloss Maker, with a spectacular glossy finish. Although you must keep in mind that this type of finish looks more artificial on clothes.

Our textile paint has a semi-gloss finish.

Last but not least, we recommend applying a coat of  Nano Protector Waterproofing. This product waterproofs and protects the garment for optimal durability.
